When Life Isn’t Going Your Way: A Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
Jun 13, 2025
Recently, I heard a well-known Instagram personality say something that stopped me in my tracks, summarizing the words it speaks about how if you’re not happy in life, it’s not because life is wrong—it’s because it’s not going the way you want it to.
It’s a confronting idea, isn’t it? But it’s also a profound invitation.
What if our unhappiness isn’t rooted in life itself, but in our resistance to it? In the expectations we’ve created, the timelines we’ve constructed, or the belief that things should be different?
This isn’t about denying the very real challenges we face, loss, disappointment, heartbreak, and failure. It’s about how we frame them.
In my work as a coach, I’ve seen this mindset shift become the pivotal turning point for so many clients. When they begin to look at their struggles not as proof that life is unfair, but as invitations to grow, everything changes.
They reframe that difficult conversation they’ve been avoiding—not as something to dread, but as a chance to practice emotional regulation and learn how to communicate with strength and clarity.
They stop seeing the missed job, the failed relationship, or the closed door as rejection—and begin to view it as redirection. Not the wrong opportunity, but not their opportunity.
This reframing doesn’t make life instantly easier. It doesn’t erase pain or bypass real emotion. But it does empower us to stop waiting for life to cooperate with our plans, and start cooperating with life as it is.
Because when we pause to consider that life isn’t against us but is actually for our evolution, we start to move out of victimhood and into authorship.
We stop asking, Why is this happening to me? and start wondering, What is this here to teach me?
This is the beginning of self-leadership.
This is the moment we become the hero of our own story.
And yes, it takes effort. It requires awareness, willingness, and the courage to sit with discomfort. It calls us to stop comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel. As they say, comparison is the thief of joy. And joy isn’t found in having everything go to plan, it’s found in discovering peace with what is.
The truth is, life is not a checklist. It’s a classroom. And the very trials we resist might just be the path to the version of ourselves we’re meant to become.
So today, I invite you to try one small shift:
Take a situation that feels like a setback, and ask, What if this is my setup? What if this is shaping me into who I’m here to be?
Because reframing isn't delusion. It's a strength. And mindset isn’t about ignoring your struggles, it’s about choosing how you respond to them.
You may not control everything that happens. But you can choose to meet it with intention.
And that, my friend, is where transformation begins.
